Doctors estimate that one out of every 300 teen athletes has some sort of undiagnosed heart problem. Data by the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research Center, estimates that 15 high school athletes are likely to die each year due to heart-related problems. Recently many experts believe that number has risen to 40 students. Even one is one too many. Be A Player™ provides free sports physicals, with an ECG for those students whom an on-site physician recommends, at no cost to the families.
Out of the 90 children who attended the first year of Be A Player™, five presented with abnormal ECGs. The second year, eight out of the 178 children who participated showed questionable ECGs. All these children were seen by a pediatric cardiologist for further testing at no cost to the families. This year we expect some 300 kids and we have increased the availability of ECG testing.
